Faculty Excellence Awards


Sponsorship:
Sponsored by the Provost's office.

Description: This award honors outstanding regular faculty members whose teaching, research and service contributions are exemplary and who strike an effective and appropriate balance among the various aspects of faculty work.

Selection Criteria: Nominations are sought from all academic departments of the campus. The nominations are transmitted to the appropriate Academic Dean who reviews the nominations and sends a prioritized list to the Chancellor's Office in October. The nominations are reviewed by a committee comprised of distinguished professors chaired by the Provost. The final selection is made by the Chancellor.

Term:
One year.

Award: Each award winner receives a $2,500 stipend funded by industry and alumni contributions.

Eligibility: Academic administrators (chairs, deans, etc..) and faculty holding the Curators' Professorship, the Distinguished Professorship, an endowed chair, or an endowed professorship are not eligible for these awards.

Outstanding Teaching Awards


Sponsorship:
Sponsored by the Provost's office and administered by the Committee for Effective Teaching and Faculty Awards.

Description: This award recognizes effective teaching through the assessment of student evaluations.

Selection Criteria: Minimum of 10 students enrolled per semester. Minimum of 8 student responses per semester. Minimum of 3 courses per year with at least 2 preparations per year, OR 4 courses per year if same preparation. Lecture classes only*. Instructors with prime teaching/faculty appointments only.The number of awardees selected will be approximately equal to the 10% of those evaluated.

Term: One year.

Award: Certificate and luncheon acknowledgement sponsored by Office of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies.

Eligibility: Distinguished Teaching Professors not eligible. Non-academic (e.g., ROTC, orientation, help) courses not to apply.

*The Committee will review the records of those responsible for recitation sections and labs (non-ROTC non-performance) and recognize an instructor (or two) in each of those categories if the ratings warrant such selection.

Dean's Teaching Scholar


Sponsorship:
The Dean's offices and administered by the Office of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies.

Description: This award honors faculty members for their ability to create and maintain an outstanding learning environment for students.

Selection Criteria: Award winners are selected by the dean of each school or college based on student course evaluations, department chair recommendations, and evidence of good teaching practices.

Term: Three years.

Award: The recipients receive $2,000 per year.

Eligibility: The award is open to all Missouri S&T faculty members except Distinguished Teaching Professors and will be awarded annually.

 
Distinguished Teaching Professorship


Sponsorship:
UM System has made a provision in the collected rules and regulations for a category of academic appointment to be known as the Distinguished Teaching Professorship. Appointment to this prestigious position will be covered by procedures and policies outlined below.

Description: These are prestigious positions and only outstanding teachers with established reputations will be considered for appointment. Therefore, it is expected that there will be few such appointments.

Selection Criteria: Nominations for appointment to the position of Distinguished Teaching Professor will be made by departments or disciplines which will furnish needed information to their respective campus administration, including opinions of prominent people in the discipline. The campus administration will make additional investigations as are appropriate. If the nominee is found worthy and the Chancellor approves the nomination, the Chancellor will forward the nomination with his or her approval to the President. The President may make such investigations as deemed necessary. If the President finds the candidate worthy, the President will recommend the appointment to the Board.

Term: Indefinite.

Award: Before the appointment is made, the President shall determine with the Chancellor the initial funding of the appointment. This funding is to include a salary supplement and an appropriate amount of support.

Eligibility: No person shall hold the title, Distinguished Teaching Professor, while serving also in a full-time administrative position. A person on a Distinguished Teaching Professor appointment asked to assume such a position may, with approval of the Board prior to the administrative appointment, reassume the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor upon expiration of that appointment.

Governor's Award for Excellence inTeaching

Sponsorship:Sponsored by the state of Missouri and administered through the Governor's office.

Description: This award recognizes an outstanding faculty member from each participating higher education institution in the state.

Selection Criteria: The following criteria is recommended; effective teaching, effective advising, service to the university community, commitment to high standards, and nurturing student achievement. Flexibility is given to each institution.

Term: One year.

Award: This is a prestigious statewide award. The recipient and guests will attend a luncheon hosted by the Governor.

Eligibility: Faculty who have received other awards for teaching excellence.

Nominations: Submit nominations in packets containing the following information. Number the pages and use tabs between sections. Nomination materials should include:

  • Nomination/Cover Letter Supporting letters (limited to 12) from nominee's chair and/or dean, colleagues, staff members, and students (current or former).
  • Nominee's personal philosophy of teaching statement, explicitly outlining his/her instructional goals,instructional strategies, and methods of bringing current research into the instructional process. Statement should not exceed 5 double-spaced pages.
  • List of courses taught and the number of students in each, as well as other instructional and advising activities during the preceding five years.
  • Summarization of multiple methods of evaluating instructional activity; including (but not limited to)student-generated teaching evaluations, evaluations of teaching effectiveness by peers, results of assessment of student learning, or other relevant methods of evaluation (do not include copies of individual student or course forms/sheets). Include interpretations of statistical data that must be explicitly detailed for understanding by reviewers who may not be familiar with the instrument.
  • Nominee's curriculum vitae (if listing presentations, include only those made in the preceding five years).

The Dean's office should provide 10 copies of the entire nomination packet to the Office of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies. Nomination packets will not be returned.

C. Brice Ratchford Memorial Fellowship


Sponsorship:
Sponsored by the C.Brice Ratchford Memorial Fellowship and administered by UM System.

Description:This award recognizes a University of Missouri faculty member who demonstrates commitment, dedication, and effectiveness in advancing the land-grant mission through extension, international education, and agricultural economics programs. The annual award is funded from a permanent endowment created with contributions from the Ratchford family and from numerous colleagues, friends and organizations in recognition of Dr. Ratchford's memory.

Selection Criteria:The fellowship is presented to a faculty member who personifies the creativity, vision, and leadership exhibited by the late Dr. C. Brice Ratchford, President Emeritus of the University of Missouri and Dean of Cooperative Extension.The Ratchford Fellow is named by the Board of Curators based upon a recommendation by the President. The President is advised by a panel, which includes representatives from the UM campuses and off-campus faculty and Missouri citizens. The panel is chaired by the MU Vice Provost for Extension and Director of Cooperative Extension. The C. Brice Ratchford Memorial Fellowship is presented at a meeting of the Board of Curators.

Award:The award is in the amount of $5,000, less applicable taxes.

Eligibility:Nominees must be faculty members with the University of Missouri. Nominations may be submitted for any University of Missouri faculty member, based on or off-campus, active or emeritus, whose accomplishments exemplify Dr. Ratchford's commitment to advancing the land-grant mission through extension, international education or agricultural economics programs. Nominations may be made by any member of the University community. Candidates for this award represent the highest standards of performance in one of the following fields: extension, international education or agricultural economics.

Nominations:Submit nominations in packets containing the following information. Number the pages and use tabs between sections. Nomination materials should include:

  • Biographical information about the nominee and a clear indication of the relationship between the nominee's work and Dr. Ratchford's commitment to the land-grant mission.
  • Supporting letters (limited to 10) from nominee's chair and/or dean, colleagues, staff members, and students (current or former).

The Dean's office should provide 10 copies of the entire nomination packet to the Office of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies. Nomination packets will not be returned.
